Jesus said, "I am the way, the truth and the life.  No one comes to the Father, except through me" (John 14:6).  He explained that salvation/eternal life is a gift--it can't be earned: "For God loved the world so much that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have everlasting life" (John 3:16).

The reason why eternal life can't be earned is that we are born sinners and our good works could never outweigh our sins.  That is why Jesus died on the cross as a sacrifice for our sins.  He paid a price that we couldn't and made salvation a gift.

That's amazing grace!
