Useful Questions For DNA

    Here are some useful questions that can be used in DNA formats. One or two questions per category are plenty.

    Nurture/Heart

    What was good about your week? Why? How did it make you feel?

    What things can we celebrate or give thanks for from this past week?

    What has brought you the most joy this week? Why?

    Where did you see Jesus in your life this week? In someone else’s life? Did you learn anything from that?

    Did your love and passion for Jesus grow this week? How?

    Did your compassion and grace towards others grow this week? How?

    What was bad about your week? Why? How did it make you feel?

    What was a significant struggle you had this week? How did you deal with it? Did you learn anything from it?

    What has made you feel worried or frustrated this week? Why? How did you deal with it?

    What has made you feel sad this week? Why? How did you deal with it?

    What has made you feel angry this week? Why? How did you deal with it?

    What has been on your mind the most this week? What’s taking most of your mental/emotional energy? Why?

    (Bring the gospel to bear on these questions above, as you discuss them. In light of the answers to these, write down some specific prayer requests to be praying for. And, pray for these things, both the good and bad, as you discuss them. Stop and pray for the specifics that are shared, immediately as they are shared.)

    Character and Obedience

    What am I consistently filling my mind with? (television, movies, music, internet, magazines, etc.) Am I making good choices? Am I making pure choices? How do I need Jesus’ help to grow in this area? (Philippians 4:8)

    How healthy is my thought life? Am I thinking pure thoughts and fleeing tempting thoughts? Am I making wise choices about staying away from tempting places and situations? How do I need Jesus’ help to grow in this area?

    Am I struggling with lust? How do I need Jesus’ help to grow in this area?

    Am I struggling with pride? How do I need Jesus’ help to grow in this area? (Philippians 2:3)

    Am I struggling with fear? How do I need Jesus’ help to grow in this area?

    Am I struggling with greed? How do I need Jesus’ help to grow in this area?

    Am I struggling with selfishness? How do I need Jesus’ help to grow in this area?

    Am I struggling with a lack of self-control in some area? How do I need Jesus’ help to grow in this area?

    How am I speaking to people? Am I building them up or tearing them down? Am I an encourager? How am I speaking about people? Am I talking about people positively or negatively? Am I gossiping? How do I need Jesus’ help to grow in this area? (Ephesians 4:29)

    What about lying? At home, at school, with my friends? Is my life characterized by truth and being truthful? How do I need Jesus’ help to grow in this area?

    What about cheating? Am I trying to be 100% honest and fair at school? At work? With my taxes? How do I need Jesus’ help to grow in this area?

    What about stealing? Am I illegally using movies, music, software? Am I being honest and pure in those areas, even if my friends or family aren’t? How do I need Jesus’ help to grow in this area?

    Am I being a good steward with my money? Am I consistently tithing? Am I a generous person? How do I need Jesus’ help to grow in this area?

    Am I being a good steward with my time? How much time am I spending watching T.V., using the Internet, or wasting time in other ways? How do I need Jesus’ help to grow in this area?

    Am I taking good care of myself physically? How are my eating, sleeping, and exercising habits? Am I taking good care of my “temple”? How do I need Jesus’ help to grow in this area?

    How am I growing in my reliance on the Holy Spirit for supernatural guidance, provision, and help in all areas of life? How do I need Jesus’ help to grow in this area?

    Identity In Christ

    How have I been growing in my identity as a child of God and as a good family member to our church body and to the larger community? How do I need Jesus’ help to grow in this area?

    How have I been growing in my identity as a missionary to my family, friends, neighbors, and co-workers? Am I consistently praying for and looking for opportunities to demonstrate Jesus through my words and actions? How do I need Jesus’ help to grow in this area?

    How have I been growing in my identity as a servant to my family, friends, neighbors, and co-workers? How am I tangibly demonstrating the compassion, grace, and generosity of Jesus to others throughout the week? How do I need Jesus’ help to grow in this area?

    How have I been growing in my identity as a learner/disciple? How am I using the Bible, the spiritual disciplines, and other resources to grow as a learner? How do I need Jesus’ help to grow in this area?

    Rhythms of the Gospel

    How have I been growing in the rhythm of being story-formed -growing in my understanding of God’s story and how my story and the stories of others intersects with God’s story? How do I need Jesus’ help to grow in this area?  

    How have I been growing in the rhythm of listening - committing significant time to listen to God through His Word, through solitude spent listening to the Holy Spirit, and then also praying for the people and things that He leads me to pray for? How do I need Jesus’ help to grow in this area?  

    How have I been growing in the rhythm of blessing – intentionally blessing others through words, gifts, or actions? How do I need Jesus’ help to grow in this area?  

    How have I been growing in the rhythm of eating – regularly eating meals with others to invite them into the family of God? How do I need Jesus’ help to grow in this area?

    How have I been growing in the rhythm of celebrating – gathering together to celebrate God’s extravagant blessings? How do I need Jesus’ help to grow in this area?

    How have I been growing in the rhythm of recreating – taking time to rest, play, and create and restore beauty in ways that reflect God to others? How do I need Jesus’ help to grow in this area?
