1 Peter: An Apologetic For Resident Aliens 1:3-5
1 Peter 1:3-5: A Living Hope
“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you, who by God's power are being guarded through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.”
Note that it is God who “causes us to be born again.” This is in the active voice, which reminds us that it is God alone who is doing the work of being “born again.” It is also important to realize that it is according to God’s mercy, which means that He is doing it for us, even though we totally deserve otherwise. This salvation is made possible by or “through” the work of Jesus on the cross and His resurrection. There is no other way that humanity can be saved. All religions point to a way, method, work or teaching; Christianity alone can point to a person and a particular work that frees men of their sins and gives them an “imperishable” prize. That prize begins here on earth as we grow in the grace and knowledge of Jesus Christ, and as we spend an eternity with God, we will continue to grow exponentially in that same grace and knowledge.
